About

Kana Nisioka

A portrait painter traveling the world to meet and portray people

Hi, I’m Kana and I’m so pleased you have found me and my art in the ocean of online contents.

Born in a small city in Japan, I am proud to have grown up in a culture of creatives from manga Dragon Ball to story scrolls illustrations of 6th Century. Without any fine arts degree, I am exploring various creative activities while also earning as an economist for over a decade.

In 2017, I moved to New Zealand with two children, and this life-changing event prompted me to rethink my life. I realised that I wanted to rekindle my passion for art that has been rising up from my heart. I had already not held a paint brush for two decades but I decided to collected art supplies. The first time I hold a paint brush in 2019 my hands were shaking for thrill and fear. This was the moment I dove into my art career.

I have been self-teaching various mediums: watercolor, acrylic, pastel, color-pencil, oil and digital. It has been an incredible experience to focus all of my energy on my artwork.

I have found oil-painting suits me eventually. Oil paint takes some time to dry, and it slows me down. It can be both bold and detailed, and heavy or light. I enjoy the slow process and many techniques. My style is Impressionism that captures transient and ambivalent effect of light and colors. The famous Impressionists are Monet, Renoir, Sysley and more. You may get the idea of Impressionism oil paintings. I convey the uniqueness of the person and the beauty of the moment, rather than photographic reality.

I am specialised in creating portraits of people. By nature I am into portraying people, not attracted to landscapes and still lives. This is interesting that I am usually shy and timid when talking with people around. You may find character and atmosphere surrounding the person in my portraits. It sometimes brings more reality than photos can.

I invite you to explore my portfolio and would love to hear from you. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or if you’re interested in purchasing a piece of my work.
